Spelling Games for Kids: Word Search and More
Spelling games turn word list practice into something kids ask to play. Better Speller has four, all built from your own list: Word Search, Spelling Choice, Fill in the Blanks and Unscramble.
Word Search
Find all the spelling words hidden in the grid by dragging across the letters. You choose whether words can run backwards or diagonally, and how many words go on the grid, so it can be gentle for younger children or harder for older ones.
Spelling Choice
Hear each word and pick the correct spelling from 4 options. Your child only has to recognize the right spelling, which makes it the gentlest of the four.
Fill in the Blanks
Some letters are hidden. Hear the word and complete the spelling. It is a step up from Spelling Choice, because your child supplies the missing letters.
Unscramble
Tap the shuffled letters in the right order to spell the word. It suits children who know the letters in a word but not yet their order.
Games made from your own list
Every game is made from the words on the list you pick, so playing is practice on this week's words. There are no ads in the games, and no account to create. See how to practice spelling words at home for where games fit in a weekly routine.
Common questions
Are the spelling games free?
Yes. Better Speller is free to try with up to 35 words, and every feature, including all four games, is included. A one-time purchase unlocks unlimited words.
Can the games use my child's own word list?
Yes. Every game is built from the list you pick, so a child can play with this week's words, sight words, or any list you build.
Which spelling game is best for young children?
Spelling Choice is the gentlest, because your child only has to recognize the correct spelling. Move on to Fill in the Blanks and Unscramble as the words become familiar.
